The Strange “Dancing Plague” Where People Danced Themselves to Death
In summer 1518 in Strasbourg (then in the Holy Roman Empire), hundreds of residents were struck by an uncontrollable compulsion to dance. What started with one woman soon spread to dozens — and some danced nonstop for days, collapsing from exhaustion or worse — in one of history’s strangest epidemics.
